We are excited to announce that CAP students in both the Environment & Society and Law & Society streams now have the opportunity to get their Place and Power requirement (3-credit graduating requirement) completed in first year!
In Environment & Society, students have the option to take CAP 101A section E02 to fulfill Place and Power in the second term. CAP 101A E02 considers the definitions of the relationship between land and power–ranging from the economic to the sacred. Students will investigate power struggles centered on land and land use in “British Columbia,” drawing on Indigenous, settler, arrivant, and immigrant perspectives. This course considers how literature, culture, media, and language play a part in shaping the power dynamics of our world. Students interested in taking this course should select section “E02” when they choose their preferred section of CAP 101A.
In Law & Society, students have the option to take CAP 101A section L02 or L03 to fulfill Place and Power in the second term. These courses investigate the legal aspects of colonialism and capitalism in Vancouver and BC. An exploration of law and literature, the courses read writing by Indigenous, Black, and Asian writers and theorists, learning from their writings how the law can marginalize, efface, and abandon, but also contest, resist, and build new relations and imaginaries.
With a growing complement of Place and Power courses, more CAP students are now able to fulfill two Faculty of Arts graduating requirements if they wish. As always, all CAP students will take CAP 100, a course that meets the Writing Requirement (all sections). Now, we are happy to introduce the option for students in select sections of CAP 101A to also complete the Place and Power Requirement (choose E02, L02, or L03 when you register if you wish to do so).
