The Coordinated Arts Program (CAP) invites applications for “Stream Peer Mentors” for the 2025-26 academic year. These are undergraduate teaching assistant (UTA) positions designed to support faculty and students in a multidisciplinary first-year cohort program.
Duration: September 1, 2025 – April 30, 2026. (This is a full year position.)
Hours: an average of 5-6 hours/week
Salary: $26.40 (as per September 2024 CUPE 2278 rates)
Number of positions: up to 4 positions
Duties: Each Stream Peer Mentor will provide support to 1-2 CAP streams under the supervision of the faculty stream lead(s). Stream Peer Mentors will offer co- and extra-curricular support within CAP (e.g. host study sessions or social events); they will also offer curricular and co-curricular support for our core courses, CAP 100 and 101 (e.g. light marking, discussion-hosting) and support program-wide Community Engaged Learning. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following activities:
- supporting enhanced coordination among stream faculty (e.g., creating composite syllabi, liaising about deadlines, supporting stream events);
- creating stream-wide or program-wide workshops or social events for students (e.g. time management workshops, study halls, or movie nights);
- supporting stream participation in the 2025W “Community Talks” speaker series (i.e. helping to organize one event in this five-event speaker series). CEL training will be provided;
- supporting core CAP courses (CAP 100 and 101) by, for example, tracking student asynchronous participation and engagement on Canvas; managing low-stakes assignments (e.g., setting up and responding to discussion threads); moderating in-class or online discussions;
- supporting faculty stream leads in their student-facing initiatives (e.g. supporting the faculty lead of the CAP student journal, or the faculty lead for the CAP student conference).
Qualifications: These positions are best suited to upper-level undergraduate students in the Faculty of Arts; CAP alumni are particularly welcome due to the program knowledge they would bring to the position. We seek candidates with the following qualifications:
- motivated, able to work both independently and collaboratively
- interest or experience in peer-based mentorship at the university level, especially in support of students’ first year transition (Jumpstart, Imagine Day, First Year Programs, Chapman Learning Commons, etc.)
- an ability to work and communicate effectively in the online environment (including an ability to navigate Canvas, MS Teams, Google Docs, Zoom, PowerPoint etc.);
- excellent writing and communication skills (experience with producing social media content an asset)
- time management skills, including an ability to work with multiple faculty and staff and balance priorities and commitments effectively
- awareness of or experience with Community Engaged Learning is an asset
